Retinal imaging: Making the gold standard in eye health available to all
At The Eye Galleria we’re very unusual in offering retinal imaging as a standard part of our eye examination, at no extra cost. The technology is one of the most accurate and advanced ways of screening for many different eye diseases and allows us to do a truly thorough job when you come to us for an eye examination.
This part of the examination is also carried out by the optometrist, who then immediately reviews the images taken and can show and explain them to you.
The retina is the light sensitive layer at the back of your eye which is responsible for a large proportion of what you can see; in particular when it comes to being able to make out detail. A number of serious eye diseases damage the retina but as they can start so slowly, and without symptoms, you probably won’t notice anything wrong for quite a long time. The longer they’re left untreated, the more long-term damage they can do to your eyes and your vision.
The retinal camera allows us to take a picture of your retina without any contact with your eye – you won’t feel a thing. It shows up the very earliest signs of diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and hypertension, all of which we become more susceptible to as we age. It can also monitor for signs of damage being caused by diabetes.
Over the years, we keep your retinal images on file and build up a long term picture of your retina and its condition. This enables us to identify problems early so we can make sure you get treatment before any significant damage is done.
It is why we can’t imagine offering eye examinations without it. To take advantage of retinal imaging, you can make an appointment by calling on 020 8891 6661, or just drop by if you would like to find out more.
